As you all know, Hurricane IKE has just passed through Cuba, a week later after our Island been affected by Gustav. Both hurricanes with very strong rains and winds almost all over the country.
All our clients were protected; they felt safe and secure and were assisted by our staff and managers, all the time. That allowed us to guarantee that any personal injuries were suffered, as it is already common in Cuba, in situations like this.
Nevertheless, the Cubanacan hotels located in Pinar del Río (Viñales, Levisa and Soroa), Holguín (Guardalavaca), Camaguey (Santa Lucía) and Las Tunas (Covarrubias) have suffered some damages. Thus, interrupting their normal operations for the moment.

I ‘am really concerned for all the Cuban people , we are booked for the Mayanabo on Oct 16 , please any knows , is this possible ???
The dining room at Mayanabo is a mess…. all the glass walls are blown out and there is much water and wind damage. Mayanabo has the least amount of damage but still major damage. Some of the a/c units are gone from Mayanabo (the big industrial ones). The palm trees behind the lobby desk are now on the desk.
From previous experiences we reckon Mayanabo Hotel is going to be fully functional by the 16th of October.
May main concern is the airport in camaguey which suffered major damages.
I recommend you get in touch with whoever you booked this through to find out if is going to be def open. f not they should find you an alternative.
I am booked to go to Brisas Guardalavaca on Nov21 and I am not sure if we will be able to go.
I know Cuba Amigo was hit hard and I have seen pictures of the damage.
I can’t imageine the damage Brisas would have.
Could you please give me any information on the damage at Brisas and I know it is hard to say but if I should cancel my trip on Nov21 and wait a bit longer to visit my favorite place.
Thanks for your time
To admin : thank you for your information , but the tour groups we book with have no news , they are all saying up until the last minute it’s a go , anyways , we will only want to go to Mayanbo in Santa Lucia , as we have many dear friends we are concerned with , plese try and keep us informed with the progress , and thank you so much for you’r answer .
Katherine .
I am going to find out for you tomorrow as soon as I can get hold of anybody in Santa Lucia and Guardalavaca
We are going to Cayo Largo on 20th nov, sites of cuba says all resorts there are closed until further notice, does anyone know, whats going on there?
We are finding it difficult to find out when these resorts in Cayo Largo are going to be open.
This is not the first time a hurricane hits Cayo Largo so badly.
Sol Cayo Largo is a solid construction from previous experiences I can assure you that by november all services at Sol Cayo Largo and Sol Pelicano are going to be up and running.
here is an email director.comercial.scl@solmeliacuba.com
If you are staying in a Sol Melia property then drop a line to the above email address.

Hi Teresa!
Sounds really good! So you have any information about damages in the Club Santa Lucia?
If not – maybe later when you’ll come back home from your trip
Hi Erhard!
Gran Club lost the solar panels. They were using it for hot wather in the bathrooms. They did not have time to remove it.Some building are damaged. The resturant is beeing fix now.Whole area has a big problem with electricity. My heart is with the people of Cuba they are going through very hard time.I horseback ride ,it gives me possibility to go to villages and see the real life.I will let you know if I find out anything new.
We have booked the playa pesquero hotel in December for 3 weeks. Having never been to cuba before we are not sure exactley what to expect and now it seems our hotel has been badly damaged. I will be travelling with my husband and my parents ( who are both in their 70′s )so really need to make sure everything will be ok at the hotel when we get there. Any updates on the playa pesquero would be really helpful. Also if anyone has stayed there can they tell us a little about their view on the hotel. Thanks.
Hi Lyndsey!
You will love it.I was there few times. The hotel is open. Some bungalows got damage.Don,t worry we travel to Cuba two-tree times a year with my mam who is 82 years old now.
Hi Teresa, Thank you that has put my mind at rest. This will be our first visit we normally go to the Dom Rep at xmas but friends said how wonderful Cuba was so we thought we would have a change and the Playa Pesquero did seem to have a lot of good reviews. So fingers crossed everything will be ok by Xmas. Thanks again i am sure my parents will be pleased to hear that your mum enjoys it there!
Hi! Lyndsey
By Christmas nobody will remember Ike.We were in Dominican this summer. We like Cuba much better.Playa Pesquero resort is the biggest in Holguin.A lot of walking. For as the nicest and not as big is Rio de luna y Mares. All the best.TERESA
I’ve been told that Cubanacan is closing offices in Europe, starting with London, is that true?
Hi Teresa!

It’s me again
Well, I wonder about your information – really good!
I’m sure – at the end of November most of their problems will be fixed – included the Solar Panels
And yes, I’m staying together with the people, too.
Teresa – I would like to get your eMail for further information. It would be easier. What do you think about that?
Saludos
Erhard
Hi! Erhard
No problema tereskagil@rogers.com
Hi Andy,
Yes is true. I am not sure about the rest of the offices in Europe but the one in London is finishing operations in December. They are not taking anymore bookings as from now.
Hello Admin , still waiting to hear about Mayanabo in Santa Lucia , heard that the block three is the only one open , as we are going Oct 16th with a group of eight , I would love to know if this is true .
Thank You .
dear katherine,
sorry for the delay. I did not have anything concrete about the state of Mayanabo Hotel.
I decided to give them a call yesterday. I spoke to the reception of the hotel. They informed me that the hotel open last sunday with all the services running normally.
I hope this gives you some peace of mind.
Hi admin,
would like to ask you the same question about the Club Santa Lucia. Yesterday I tried to call the German tourist board of Cuba in Frankfurt. Unfortunately, nobody was reachable ….
Hi admin
Do you have any information about Brisas Guardalvaca. I still can’t get a straight answer if they will be running by the End of Nov when iam do to go.
Is there anyway you can find out for me or tell me where I can get some info.
Thanks for your help.
A friend of mine from Las Tunas made a phone-call to the Club Santa Lucia yesterday. So AC/DC seems to be back. He talked to a guy from the Hotel. He told him, that only the garden was damaged?!
I can’t believe it ….
I’m leaving for Holguin, Sol Luna y Mares on saturday.. any review if the hotel is a mess or ok?
Sol Luna y Mares no problem.I talked to my friend there is O.k.
That,s my favorite place in Cuba.
Teresa

does anyone have any new post hurrican pictures of Club Amigo. We can’t wait to go back in March. Anyone going in the next few months should take things like hammers, nails, tarps, plastic for roofing, clothing, medical supplies and veggie seeds. Please don’t stop going because of what has happened. The Cuban people need all of us now more than ever. viva Cuba

Thx,
jack
Don’t worry folks, we were some of the first tourists to visit after the hurricane. Read our comments on TripAdvisor, Camaguey forum. Our Cuban friends need all the help they can get.
You can also see a couple of our pictures on NJTToronto website.
Hope this helps.
23 Oct.2008
We have just returned from Gran Club Santa Lucia.Every thing is back to normal there. The houses of the local people are in a bad shape with no roof or totally destroyed.A lot of vegetation has been destroyed, but a new one has been planted.Ike started at 11p.m and finished around 7a.m.The power was lost at8p.m and after 20 days was back.Beach is still very nice and almost all of the palm trees are there. They are still working on replacing the roof of the walkway to the swimming pool, but that should be finished in a week or two.Almost evey pavilion has been painted.Food was very good, but not too much veggies to choose from from. They have some problem with fresh vegetables right now.The pierre with the seafood restaurant is gone. Also the pierre at Club Amigo is lost.We had fantasic time.In July I was in a Dominican Republic, also in 3,5*.Gran Club is like a 5* compare to it.Write to me if You like to know more.We will go back there anytime but we would like to see more places in Cuba.
Claub Amigo Caracol and Mayanabo look like IKE did forgot about them.Teresa
Teresa, thank you so much for all the updates. I’m booked to go to Gran Club the first week of December. Any advice/suggestions for me?
The best accomodation are junior suite. They are centraly located, nice and big.
Enjoy, Teresa
I think I was misunderstood. We are going to Club Amigo in Guardalavaca in March. We have recently been told that most of the resort is opening on Nov. 1. Here’s hoping all is well for all our friends who are working so hard to bring their lives back to normal.
Thanks Teresa! I’m so glad I booked the Junior Suite. Is there anything in particular the locals need that I can bring along for them?
Sharon
Hi Sharon!
People need everything.Right now is impossible to get any detergent,Soap, shampoo, but whatever you take there people will thank you for.Have you ever been to Gran Club?
Teresa
Hi Teresa,
hi Sharon,

Erhard

Erhard….sure let’s get together for a drink – I’m arriving Dec 4 – 11. Not sure you’ll miss us, we’ll be 8 girls travelling to together.
Hi Sharon!
The safety box is 25 Cuban peso. They will refund your money at the end of your stay. You can use it for Cuban departure tax.Have a drink for me with Erhard.
Teresa
@Sharon
8 girls?! Oh my dear …. however – we will be there. My wife and myself. I wonder about the group, hi hi … maybe we will be the only people from Germany
@Teresa
No problem at all
I’m not sure if it works – a picture:

Hi Erhard!
Che linda your wife is.Watch out for Cuban men, they will be after her.
Hi!Sharon!
Entrance to a disco outside the resort is 1 Cuban convertible peso.Don’t let them charge you more.
Teresa
Has anyone stayed at the Brisas Guardalavaca since Ike? I believe it has just reopened. We stated at Playa Costa Verde two years ago and since the day I came back I have longed to return to Cuba!
Thanks Teresa….I’m a little concerned right now…just heard that a hurricane is expected to hit Camerguey this weekend.
Erhard, we’ll have to make sure we have that drink for Teresa.
Yes, “Paloma” went over the area of Camagüey last night. I’ve lost the contact one more time to a friend of mine, located in Las Tunas not far away of Santa Lucia. It’s horrible this year …
@Sharon: Yes, that’s a good idea! One drink for Teresa to say thanks for her kind help.
Hello,
Anyone has information about Club Amigo Mayanabo after the latest Hurricane (Paloma)? We are scheduled to go on December 5th.
I feel so bad for the Cuban community, they’ve been through so much this year with all those devastating hurricanes! Hope no one was seriously injured…
Thanks,
Pat
I’d also be interested to know if anyone hears about damage at Gran Club Hotel Santa Lucia. I heard that Camaguey was the area that Paloma hit.
Sharon
Well, I’ve got an eMail from Las Tunas. Nothing special there. Sounds good – hopefully there are no damages at all.
Erhard
Erhard!
Thank you for updates.
Sharon where are You from?
I’m from Ontario,Canada
Teresa
Hi Teresa, I’m also from Ontario. I’m north of Toronto. Anything really excited I should make sure to see or do while I’m there?
Erhard, we’ll deinitely have to hook up in Cuba for that drink. You’ll find me easier than I’ll find you. If you see a group of 7 women…that’s us.
Sharon
Hi Sharon!
Since You have never been to Cuba,Cameguey trip is very nice.It is a colonial city very diffrent from what we are use to in Canada.I don’t remember how much was it. Seven girls I’m sure you will have a very good there.
Teresa
@Sharon
If you like a trip, ask for “El Salton”. That’s a really beautiful place. It’s waterfall and a quite place as well.
