Jardines del Rey

Beaches are ideal places for relaxing and engaging in water sports: swimming, kayaking, pedal boating, windsurfing and water skiing. Beach-front hotels with high
standards of comfort complement the offer.

Coco, Guillermo and Paredon Grande Cayos have more than 31 miles (50 kilometres) of heavenly beaches, most of which have been left in their natural state. These include Pilar Beach, on Guillermo Cay; Los Pinos Beach, on Paredon Grande Cayo; and Flamencos Beach, on Coco Cay. Larga and El Paso Beaches have installations offering services for visitors. Pilar Beach is famous in the cays for the excellence of its sand and water.

All of these beaches are of white coralline sand. The waves and currents around them are gentle, and their sandy seabed slope down gently, as well. There are no dangerous marine species, and the warm water is excellent for swimming and other water sports.

Scuba Diving

The long coral reef is between one and two miles (between one and a half and three kilometres) from the cays, at depths of between a little over 16 and 131 feet (between 5 and 40 meters), in warm, very clear water. There are more than 20 diving sites near Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Paredon Grande.

One coral formation more than six miles (ten kilometres) long, at a depth of between 33 and 98 feet (between 10 and 30 meters), which has a great abundance and diversity of fish, gives you the feeling of being inside an enormous aquarium. Here, you can see Groupers (Epinephelus morio), Snappers (Lutjanus spp.), schools
of Barracudas (Sphyranea barracuda), sea turtles, reef sharks and other species.
There is good visibility throughout the area, and the average water temperature
of 75.2° F. (24° C.) is pleasant for scuba diving and other water sports.

The depth of the seabed at Casasa varies between 33 and 82 feet (between 10 and
25 meters). Here, the sandy bottom has scattered large coral formations, and you can find Southern Stingrays (Dosyotis americana), turtles and large schools of Barracudas.

At La Jaula, you can find healthy colonies of coral, large Gorgonians (Gorgonacea sp.) and beautiful sponges, plus some reef sharks. Depending on just where you dive, the seabed is between 49 and 98 feet (between 15 and 30 meters) down. Naturally, as its name indicates, meetings with sharks are normal in the area known as Tiburones (Sharks), where a wealth of fauna complements the interesting coral formations. The uneven bottom at Las Coloradas (39 feet, or I2 meters, down) has small caves, grottoes and tunnels covered with beautiful coral that are the home of a great variety of reef-dwellers, including Stoplight Parrotfish (Sparisoma viride) and Angelfish (Pomacanhus spp).

The international scuba-diving centres in the area are staffed by highly qualified instructors and equipped with technical resources that fully meet internationally recognized standards.

Other Water Sports

All of the hotels have beach clubs that offer a wide range of water sports equipment (both with and without motors).

Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Paredon Grande have installations and resources for yachting and for going on catamaran trips to virgin beaches. Enjoy the natural beauty of our cays and develop your sports fishing skills. Choose between half and full-day fishing trips with hook, line and sinker; fly fishing; or deep-sea fishing in areas containing the most prized species.

Take a pleasant cruise to a coral reef in a glass-bottom boat to discover the enchantments of coral formations or explore the coastline, bays and the seabed between the cays to see the local flora and fauna. Make your reservations by calling
50-1221 or 30-1231.

The Jardines del Rey Archipelago has plenty of good fishing areas, among which the following are particularly outstanding:

La Redondo Luke

Near Coco Cay it is 1.7 square miles (4.5 square kilometers) in size, with an extensive network of channels. La Redonda is considered one of the lakes with the greatest concentrations of Largemouth Bass in Cuba. The International Fishing Centre is located here.

Florencia Reservoir
Largemouth Bass also abound in this reservoir up in the Florencia Hills in western Ciego de Avila Province.

Deep-Seo Fly Fishing
White Marlins (Tetrapturus albidus), Blue Marlins (Mukaira nigrencans), Dorados and other insular shelf species have runs all along the northern shore of the Cayos, fishing yachts with specialized crews are available.

Nature

The high degree of conservation of the natural resources in the Jardines del Rey Archipelago gives it unparalleled biodiversity.

El Baga Natural Park, on Cayo Coco, has several ecosystems. Take the El Baga Trail
to see local flora and fauna and learn about the history of the area and traditional culture. The park’s wide variety of offers makes it one of the greatest attractions on the northern cays.

Be sure to see the dunes at Loma del Puerto and Pilar Beach. The latter—more than 49 feet (15 meters) high-is one of the most important dunes in the entire Caribbean.

At La Silla Inn, you can see important ecosystems of mangrove trees and large
populations of Roseate Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber ruber). Some of the trails on Loma del Puerto and at La Guira have special characteristics. Explore Cunagua Hill, Florencia and La Redonda Lake to see typical Cuban scenery, flora and fauna.

Ecotourism
On the Cays

Hiking is very popular on the cays. There are two nature trails for observing local endemic species:

Las Dolinas (Sink Holes} Trail
This circular trail is 1.3 miles (2.1 kilometres) long. It is of little difficulty, and you can cover it in an hour and 45 minutes. It goes through an evergreen forest on the north-central part of Cayo Coco, slightly over three and a half miles (around six kilometres) from the Tryp hotels. The trail will take you to 11 sink holes in different states of preservation, passing a large number and variety of birds and interesting plants.

La Guira Trail
This trail is a mile (1.7 kilometres) long, in the area around La Guira. It is of little difficulty, and you can cover it in an hour and 15 minutes. From it, you can see three different ecosystems: microphyllous evergreen forests, mangrove areas and inland lakes, each with its corresponding fauna.

In the Middle of the Territory
Going inland in the province, you will find other fascinating areas:

Cunagua Hill and its Trails
Canuga Hill is 1158 feet, or 364 meters, above sea level. One of the highest points
in Ciego de Avila Province, it is a national wildlife refuge 2742 hectares in size. You can reach it from Moron by taking the road that goes to the town that has grown up
around the Bolivia Sugar Mill.

Tour of Florencia
Florencia, a small rural town in north-western Ciego de Avila Province, is in the foothills of the Jatibonico Mountain Range. Ride horseback from the town to nearby places of interest (intermediate difficulty). See how the farmers in the area live, look out over the valley with its fields of tobacco and other traditional crops, visit a manmade lake, explore the valley of the Jatibonico del Norte River and see a singular natural phenomenon: the river’s swallow in the mountains, where it simply disappears from sight.

Leche (Milky} Lake
This lake-25.5 square mile (66 square kilometres) in size-is the largest natural reservoir in Cuba. It has an impounding capacity of 35.3 million cubic feet (100 million cubic meters) of water. Its name reflects the colour of the water when the wind stirs up the large concentrations of plaster and particles of lime which lie on its bottom. It is a natural refuge for Reseate Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber ruber), which can be seen most of the time, and other species of water birds. Once a year, a
colourful Water Carnival is held here. The lake is just under two miles (three kilometres) from the city of Moron.

Oasis Farm
This farm is a little less than 12.5 miles (20 kilometres) from the provincial capital, going east on the Central Highway. Fruit and palm trees predominate in this rural setting.

Excursions

By Sea
Catamaran departures from the Aguas Tranquilas, Casasa and Cayo Guillermo Marina. Choose between half- and full-day excursions, including food and drinks on board with time for snorkelling and enjoying the sunset.

Excursions from Pilar Beach to Media Luna Cay and flamingo tours to see the Roseate Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber ruber) on the south-western part of Cayo Coco.

The Jungle Tours excursion goes through channels south of Guillermo Cay to see the ecosystems in the area, with time for snorkeling. For more information, see www.jungletour-cuba.com.

Twenty miles (32 kilometres) south of the city of Ciego de Avila, the Jucaro Marina offers facilities for living-on-board excursions, scuba diving and catch-and-release sports fishing in the Jardines de la Reina Archipelago, which has been declared a national park. For a truly memorable experience, stay at Villa Tortuga, a floating hotel with seven rooms.

On Land
Excursions and tours through the cays visiting La Guira, Jabali Cave, Pilar Beach and other scenic spots.

Tour of Florencia: Horseback riding from the town of Florencia to nearby places of interest.

Excursion to Cunagua Hill: Two trails for bird-watching and getting in closer contact with Nature.

The Story of Sugar: Excursion that combines a visit to La Redonda Lake (with a motorboat ride through its channels); Moron (with rides in horse-drawn carriages); a farm-style lunch at Rancho Palma; and a visit to the Patria Sugar Mill, to see how sugar is made.

Excursion to Moron and Ciego de Avila: Tours of the centres of both cities, with visits to centres of historic, political, cultural and social interest.

Excursion to El Baga Natural Park: Contact with the ecosystems on the Cayos.

Places of Interest
It’s easy to reach places of natural beauty by car, bus, motorcycle or horse-drawn carriage.

Sea, Sun and Breezes
La Silla Inn: Located at the point where you reach the island by car. It has a rustic lookout point from which you get a panoramic view of the scenic attractions in the area, including a (colony of Roseate Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber ruber).

Lu Guira: This site, near the centre of the cays, is a restored early-20th-century charcoal-makers settlement. It offers several recreational options, such as horseback riding and farm parties.

Jabali Cave: Evening shows and dinner.

Pilar Beach: A memorable beach because of the singular, pristine nature of its coast, sand and seabed. Restaurant and water sports.

EI Boga Natural Park: Diverse ecosystems and elements representing all of the cays.

Cayo Coco Thalassotherapy Centre: Quality-of-life treatments with algae and mud applications and stimulating massages to combat stress, closely monitored by specialized personnel in a natural environment or using state-of-the-art technology.

With Your Feet on the Ground
The pulse of the cities and towns in the province beats to their dynamic socioeconomic development, and their inhabitants’ warm-hearted hospitality puts the finishing touch on their architectural and cultural values.

Ciego de Avila: Capital of the province of the same name, this city was founded in 1840. lt is 62 miles (100 kilometres) south of Coco Cay. On streets carefully laid out at right angles, its buildings display a free interpretation of the classicism of an eclectic period, together with occasional examples of other influences, such as Andalusian Arabic, the baroque and art-deco. The houses in many blocks have adjoining porches and neoclassical columns in several designs.

When in Ciego de Avila, be sure to visit Marti Park, the heart of the city’s social life;
the Principal Theater, whose design combines the Renaissance, Empire and baroque styles; San Eugenio de la Palma Church; the Museum of History and Decorative Art; the art gallery; the Sevilla Hotel; and the former Colonia Espanola (a club for Spaniards and their descendants), now a community centre.

Moron: Located to the north, a few miles from Coco Cay, this city – founded 460 years ago-is the second most important one in the territory. Its architecture shows influences of European styles dating from the end of the 19th century. Visit the rooster monument made by outstanding Cuban sculptress Rita Longa, an example of both cultural and traditional importance and the symbol of the city-Moron is also known as “the city of rooster.”

Other important buildings include the former Colonia Espanola (a club for Spaniards and their descendants), the railroad station and the community centre. Visits to the Municipal Museum and to the art gallery are also very rewarding.

The province also boasts a singular village, Poblado Holandés (Dutch Town), on the road to Cayo Coco. It was built in the Dutch style in the 1960s for the families of cattle workers in the area.

The hotel infrastructure on the cays features 5- and 4-star installations right on the beach. The All-Inclusive system is employed in all of them, though other plans may be arranged.
