Information On Why A Window Refurbishment Will Cost More Than A Replacement

Posted by | Posted in History | Posted on 16-04-2011

Replacing a window is an expensive exercise, but can be even more expensive when it comes to replacing sash windows. Unfortunately for the owners many older buildings that have these types of windows may be subject to a conservation order. This means that approval to replace them is unlikely. Owners may agree to sash window refurbishment mistakenly believing that, to be the cheaper option.

These Victorian style windows are common in buildings with historical relevance and are often subject to a listed building status. The listed building status means that an alteration to the look, size or replacement or removal of any of its features is not permitted. Owners often choose what they believe would be the cheaper option and go for restoration.

Obtaining approval for changes to listed buildings is much more complex and difficult to gain. Specialist knowledge of the listed building regulations and experience of restoration projects is a must when choosing an architect to draw up and submit plans. No work can be carried out until approval is given.

Many of the materials and parts used in the construction of the original sash windows may no longer be available. Or they may be difficult and expensive to find. Some parts will have to be made using original materials and to the exact specification of the original.

A variety of different types of wood were used in making surrounds. If they are no longer available it is likely the surrounds would all have to be replaced rather than repaired. An alternative type of modern material would be very unlikely to meet with preservation approval. Having new frames built to original non-standard specification would require specialist skills.

Historically these windows move up and down inside the casing. Weights attached to a pull cord were used to pull the windows up and down. The weights and cord are specialist items that are in short supply and are expensive. Altering the way a window opens and closes so that it goes out and in is one alteration that may not obtain approval.

The addition of double glazing or adding security measures to help cut down on the drafts and provide insulation will likely be high on the owners list for must do. As it is a listed building there are strict regulations on what can and cannot be done. Expert advice is a costly necessity.

Sash window restoration may initially sound more cost effective than replacing the whole window. However, taking into account all the potential costs involved it may not be the least expensive option for you. So it is worth re-evaluating other options before refurbishing.

The Calvinistic Reformers Were Right About Worship: Defending the Historic View of the Regulative Principle

Posted by | Posted in History | Posted on 11-04-2011

Critics of the Reformation doctrine of the regulative principle of worship (Steve Schlissel, Doug Wilson, and others) need to give us something specific as to their positive position on the second commandment and the public worship of God. We who uphold the Reformation doctrine of the regulative principle have specifically set forth our positive position concerning public worship in numerous lectures, books, newsletters, web pages, etc. It is the critics’ turn to do likewise. [youtube:gDTa5xGF9dg?fs=1;Biblical Worship: The [link:Regulative Principle] of Worship in History;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDTa5xGF9dg?fs=1&feature=related]

Opponents of the regulative principle must study the pertinent information and then present the best case for their view of what is allowed and forbidden by the second commandment. Let us see their positive position so that we can critique it. They have been critiquing our position, so now it’s our turn to critique theirs. Then others can decide for themselves who represents the Biblical position in this debate.

The historical and theological sources cited by the modern detractors of Reformation worship will be clearly evident once they get around to presenting their position. Will they be citing the Westminster Divines, the Reformation Dutch Synods, John Calvin, John Knox, Samuel Rutherford, George Gillespie, and John Owen in support of their views? We already know the answer to that question.

At that point there won’t be any doubt about who the real classical Protestants are and who are innovators in worship.

I also ask the reader to consider the following questions: Were the Calvinistic Reformers and their Confessions all wrong in their interpretation of Scripture concerning worship? Were the Lutherans, Prelates and Romanists right?

In providing the *specifics* of their position on worship will our modern reformers prove to the onlooking Christian community that they follow in the footsteps of the original Reformers? Or, will they show that they follow in the footsteps of those who opposed the Reformation? Will they adopt the classical Protestant position on worship or will they reject it — and be honest enough to say so publicly?

There are two sides to the coin of the regulative principle of worship. If you agree with it and apply it faithfully to every part of public worship, you are in agreement with the Westminster Assembly and the Covenanted Reformation. If you fundamentally disagree with it, then you have embraced the fundamental principles of Roman Catholic worship.

There is no neutrality; you either worship God according to His appointment, or you will find some human substitute. (This article has been adapted from “Saul in the Cave of Adullam by Reg Barrow.)

Jamaican Storytelling

Posted by | Posted in History | Posted on 09-02-2011

No matter what the culture or language is, the purpose of storytelling is to pass down history and information to the next generation. Storytelling is as old as time itself, and in Jamaica recounting stories is as natural a behavior as drinking rum.

When African slaves were picked up and dropped in laborious plantations in Jamaica (as well as other locations around the world), it was their duty to pass on the elements of African culture to the next generation. Otherwise the precious legends, languages, proverbs and characters from their home would be forgotten forever. Jamaican proverbs allowed slaves to communicate with each other without their masters understanding. For example an idiom told from one slave to another can impart a specific feeling or event that if the slave master knew about, could cause trouble.

The most popular character in Jamaican folklore is Anancy, also referred to as Anansi, Nancy Spida or Brer Nansi. Anancy is a trickster African spider-god who often goes against other animal gods. Very often slaves would characterize their slave master as a certain animal and tell stories about how Anancy would trick the animal, thus imparting plans of outsmarting them. The spider-god is a great representation of the problems African slaves faced on the plantations. The trickery of Anansy was a necessary way to get past the slave masters, the greed was how slaves justified their need to steal the necessities of life, and even the creature the god represented speaks of the slave’s self image. Parents would also tell their children stories of Brother Spider to strike fear of misbehaving, or the ‘duppy’ (ghost) would get them.

One popular folk story tells of the tiger-god demanding the spider-god to bring him a great swarm of bees. This a great representation of the impossibilities the Jamaican people faced through their history. With the white man symbolized by the tiger-god and the Jamaicans as the spider-god, the request illustrates the unreasonable demand and level of danger involved in meeting it. Only through the wise trickery of the spider-god can the bees be convinced to leave their habitat and go to the tiger-god.

Music and poetry have always gone hand in hand with storytelling. The rhythm of poetry adds to the drama of the story and makes it more memorable. The are several differences between European poetry and that originating from Africa, but perhaps the biggest difference is in the use of rhyme, or lack thereof. The poetic form of Jamaican storytelling is not in its rhyme, but in its rhythm and song-like flow. The story is told in stages with rising and falling events, always ending in a lesson from an ancient African king or god. Yes, the lessons are meant to pass stories on to the next generation, but they are also for the purpose of awakening the consciousness in the listener. The stories point out a situation and offer advice on ways to move forward, but with the use of history. So, it is a cyclical process.

Take a look at the lyrics of Jamaican music and you will find more storytelling. Many traditional folk songs tell of simple things like observations of nature. Yellow Bird is an old folk song that speaks of loneliness and a lone yellow bird sitting in a banana tree. Others tell of working in the hot sun for little pay. Mango Time talks about working under the hot sun for little pay harvesting mangoes.

Even today, on the street corners of Jamaican towns you will find men and women standing around telling their stories of the day, some have been heard before and others are tall tales meant to spark humor in the crowd. When you visit Jamaica, stop and listen to the sounds of the local people. No doubt you will hear stories with elements of the African folk tales from hundreds of years ago.

How Long Has Pottery Been A Big Industry?

Posted by | Posted in History | Posted on 02-02-2011

Pottery is the given name to ceramic items which are created by potters. The items are also made in a pottery as well as it beings its actual name. Pottery is a well known process for creating everyday needed items and is seen as both a technology and an art form. The process of pottery is forming clay into objects which will be baked to hold their shape using a kiln that produces extremely high temperatures.

A period between 10,500 and 450BC presents one of the earliest known examples of pottery however no exact date is known for the beginning. Back when the earliest known examples were found in Japan and China, they were made using the same method used today of fired clay. These early examples from Japan and China were more characteristically artistic whereas today, pottery is mainly used domestically.

There are a number of types of pottery all different however all types of pottery are a variation of an early method with some form of development. One method uses clay or bonded clay which is then baked at a tremendously high temperature until it is extremely hard. This basic technique is known as earthenware. Different temperatures produce different levels of hardness and earthenware produces a very, very hard result.

The second type is similar to earthenware in that it is created in the same way. After baking to a similar level though the clay is glazed; this makes it entirely waterproof. This type is known as stoneware and has become the commonly used domestic version of pottery which is still used now. The third type was commonly made in China and was lead based but included a mix of ground glass.

Pottery has a widespread history and still attracts a huge amount of interest due to how little it has changed over the years. Despite all of the advancements in technology, a number of traditional potteries still exist and are active; which produce pottery exactly how it was made in the beginning.

Doing a Background Check is Easier Than You Might Expect

Posted by | Posted in History | Posted on 31-01-2011

Are you curious about someone’s past? Whether you are just curious or there is a reason you must know about a persons past, you might want to consider running a background check on this person.

In the past the only way to uncover a persons past history was to enlist the help of a private investigator. These days, thanks to the internet, it is possible to conduct such an investigation in the privacy of your own home.

There are many reasons why you may want to do a background check on someone. Many employers run background checks on prospective employees, while others use the service to find out about someone they have a personal relationship with.

Many people will run the background check on themselves in order to make sure that the information stored in the databases is accurate. If an error is revealed, contact information is provided so that the records can be updated to reflect the right information.

There are a number of websites that provide this service. The company maintains a large database of information that is easy to search. A background check can provide a wealth of information on the person you are inquiring about. You can reveal any criminal history, their credit history, past addresses and more. The background check can uncover a person’s history in great detail.

Expect to pay a reasonable fee when running a background check on an individual. The companies that maintain the databases obviously have expenses to cover, so they need to charge fees to access the records. If you want to try to do the research on your own, it is possible. You might not reveal much information though. Unless the person has an incredibly unique name, there is a chance the information returned may refer to another individual. Additionally, sensitive information such as criminal or credit history will likely not be revealed. To conduct your search, just type the persons name and location within quotation marks in your browsers search bar. Give it a shot; there is no charge to do a search.

If your own investigation reveals nothing, look for a company to perform the background check for you. Search for one that offers a money back guarantee. With this guarantee, if nothing is found, nothing is lost. If you want to perform multiple background checks you might want to look for a company that offers a membership plan; a one time fee is charged that allows you to run background checks whenever you need to.

A background check can be very revealing. You never have to leave the comfort and privacy of your home to find the information you want.

Click Here to try a free background check report search. Your criminal background check report will include full information about anyone’s past and will be instantly displayed on your computer screen!

Posted by | Posted in History | Posted on 25-01-2011

The role of a person, who is an entrepreneur, changes constantly and very often. Many people falsely believe that they cannot do much. They tend to limit themselves and their abilities. The story about a man named Ranier is really amazing. It is true as well.

Adam Ranier opened his eyes in Graz – a little village located in Australia. From the time of his birth, Adam’s growth rate was impeded. He was really short. In fact, when he turned 21, he was only 3 foot and 10 inches tall. He was considered a dwarf then.

Then something happened and he started to gain height at an astounding rate. Doctors are still unable to assign a cause to his astounding growth spurt.

Pituitary gland is responsible for a person’s growth. It seemed as if this gland has started to overwork in the case of Adam as he turned 21. He was a good 7 feet 8 inches tall, when he died.

He is considered to be the only person in the history to have lived a life of a dwarf and a giant in the same lifetime. Now, this is something.

The lives of entrepreneurs are really special. They are so challenging and filled with so many ups and downs. Entrepreneurs are constantly changing, becoming better and starting afresh.

Age and other limitations define nothing for us. You will find something new at every step of the way – ready to be explored.

The key here is to believe in yourself. You should not be afraid to explore new horizons based on your past condition. Take the leap and have some faith in yourself.

Happy Buddha: The Story of Ho Tai

Posted by | Posted in History | Posted on 23-01-2011

The Buddha most often referred to as “happy Buddha” or “laughing Buddha” is really a Chinese Zen monk who lived approximately 1000 years ago who has become a significant part of Buddhist lore. This celestial Buddha’s name was actually Hotei or Ho Tai. He was known for his generosity and came to be seen as an incarnation of the bodhisattva, an enlightened being who has achieved Buddhahood.

It’s believed he is a Maitreya or future Buddha who will someday return to Earth. His ample midsection and pleasant smile have given him the common name “laughing Buddha.”

It’s quite common to find Happy Buddha statues in temples, businesses and restaurants as he is a deity that represents prosperity and wealth. Careful examination will often reveal a sack on the back of a Hotei statue. Legend has it this was filled with candy for children or rice plants symbolizing the “wealth of food.” His sack also represents the “suffering of the world” which he carries with him. Similar to the Catholic St. Nicholas, Hotei is the patron saint of the weak, downtrodden and children.

A happy Buddha statue depicts a rotund man, bald with an ample, protruding belly peaking through his loose robes. The generous midsection is a symbol of plenitude and good fortune. With his smiling face and paunch, the happy Buddha also carries a crooked walking stick and his faithful sack.

The laughing or “happy” Buddha is often on display in the homes of Easterners providing a symbol of prosperity. He may be sitting, standing or reclining with each posture having a certain connotation. The reclining position is inspired by the last moments of the “historic Buddha” who gathered his disciples and shared his insights reclining in a garden just before he passed on into Nirvana. Other statues of the laughing Buddha portray a cheerful, stout man with a broad smile who may raise his two hands filled with gold or sit atop a mound of gold coins. The laughing Buddha on a dragon throne is another popular statue which represents strength and power.

The happy Buddha often wears a rosary as a symbol of prayer or a beggar’s bowl meant to symbolize his lack of worldly possessions. the oogi, is a Chinese wish giving fan that was used by Chinese aristocracy and reflects the happy Buddha’s ability to grant wishes for those who cherish him.

In the West, he is often referred to as the “Fat Buddha” and keen observers might recognize a parallel between this rotund patron to children and their own Santa Claus. Both are generous, full of good cheer and known to give gifts to children.

It’s believed that if you rub the belly of a laughing Buddha you are sure to enjoy good luck, prosperity and wealth. Ho Tai is also considered the patron of bartenders and restaurant owners and is frequently seen displayed prominently in Asian restaurants. Overindulgence in food and drink are often credited to the influence of the laughing Buddha.

It’s always a good karma shopping experience at Big Buddha Statue where you can find a great selection of Laughing Buddha statues to fit your budget .

Discover Who Invented The Sash Window And What Is Its Origins

Posted by | Posted in History | Posted on 19-01-2011

The question of who invented the sash window and what is its origins is one that most architects can probably answer. The man who is credited with the idea was an English philosopher, mathematician, scientist, and inventor interested in mechanics.

Robert Hooke was born poor and apprenticed to a watchmaker after he was orphaned. However, his prodigious talent and intelligence won him an education. A member of the Royal Society, Hooke spent his days studying, writing, teaching, corresponding, and inventing things like telescopes to study the stars and springs that made it possible to make watches, among other things.

Before Hooke’s design, windows were either fixed or casement windows that opened on hinges, swinging inwards as a rule and latching when shut. Panes were small, since sheet glass would not be mass produced until the 1950s. Many small, diamond shaped panes in leaded frames were customary. The glass itself was either cast or blown, with many distortions and variations of thickness and clarity.

Sash windows were the most common type in the Georgian and Victorian periods and are still used more than any other style, although many changes in materials and shape have developed. Sometimes the sash will move horizontally, although vertical movement is most common.

Before this, windows either did not open or swung outwards on hinges (casement windows). Hooke’s design consisted of two sections, an upper, fixed panel of small panes and a lower one that moved up and down to open and close the window. A system of counter weights allowed the window to be raised to a open position that would hold until force was applied to close it. Hooke, who had studied gravity, the refractive properties of glass, and the workings of clocks and springs, created a design that is still used today.

Since the cast glass of the 1600s only made small panes, the early windows consisted of individual panes set in muntin bars inside a frame, two or more of which made up a window unit. The clear, undistorted glass we have today that comes in large sheets if desired is made possible by innovations in glass production that date from the 1950s. Hooke’s windows and those made for centuries were single glazed, but today double and triple glazing is often chosen to deaden noise and conserve energy.

‘Who invented the sash window and what is its origins’ is an interesting bit of knowledge that many people that enjoy this convenience never know.
