Jazz Guitar Players Come Full Circle

Posted by | Posted in Culture | Posted on 20-04-2011

During the early part of the twentieth century, the stringed instrument used in the jazz repertoire was not the guitar, but the banjo. Then as now, folk, country and bluegrass used the banjo for its timbre. But jazz guitar players found that it had a tone and presence able to compete with the horns and drums.

Gibson come out with the first hollow-body acoustic guitar that could finally replace the banjo in 1923. A musician could now play a more complex set of chords and provide an interesting rhythm. By the 1930s the banjo was back in the country fold and the guitar was on its way to gaining a solid place in the swing orchestra. It was on the road to coolness.

By the late 1930s, the electric guitar made its debut and things were never the same. Finally there was a stringed instrument that could be heard amongst the dissonance that make up an orchestra. Whether it be swing, bebop, smooth, fusion or hard-bop, it now had an undeniable presence.

Guitarist Charlie Christian was the first to use this new amplification in his recordings with The Benny Goodman Orchestra. He was a rarity however. The big-band orchestras placed the guitarist in the rhythm section, rarely as a solo instrument. Unless you were Django Reinhardt who played a style so inventive it had to be front and center.

By the 1940s, things were shaken up with the advent of small combos, replacing orchestras. Quartets, trios, sextets and quintets began to dominate. With the development of the bebop style, guitarists were now soloists with name recognition. Kenny Burrell, Barney Kessel, Wes Montgomery were just a few of the players to make their own recordings. By the 1960s, they were famous.

By the 1970s, a new style, fusion, came to the forefront. In this, the jazz guitarist took up the proclivities of rock guitarists and turned up the volume. Inspired by the blues-styles of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck, jazz would take heavy metal and give it its own twist. John McLaughlin was the most prominent practitioner, but others followed. Like their rock counterparts, they made full use of all the tricks and distortion amplification could provide. It shrieked and hollered in the spotlight.

Fusion had its appeal for some but was replaced by a smoother, commercial sound by the 1980s. The wah-wah pedal and the octave splitters were sent packing while jazz continued to merge itself into other genres such as world music, blues, pop and new-age. This clean sound goes right back to Charlie Christian. There is a neo-traditional school intent on playing the cool, lush sound of the early guitarists. Django Reinhardt continues to influence a new generation of jazz guitar players whose Latin style is popular in dance clubs. We have come full-circle. Even the jazz banjo has a growing fan base.

The Calvinistic Reformers Were Right About Worship: Defending the Historic View of the Regulative Principle

Posted by | Posted in History | Posted on 11-04-2011

Critics of the Reformation doctrine of the regulative principle of worship (Steve Schlissel, Doug Wilson, and others) need to give us something specific as to their positive position on the second commandment and the public worship of God. We who uphold the Reformation doctrine of the regulative principle have specifically set forth our positive position concerning public worship in numerous lectures, books, newsletters, web pages, etc. It is the critics’ turn to do likewise. [youtube:gDTa5xGF9dg?fs=1;Biblical Worship: The [link:Regulative Principle] of Worship in History;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDTa5xGF9dg?fs=1&feature=related]

Opponents of the regulative principle must study the pertinent information and then present the best case for their view of what is allowed and forbidden by the second commandment. Let us see their positive position so that we can critique it. They have been critiquing our position, so now it’s our turn to critique theirs. Then others can decide for themselves who represents the Biblical position in this debate.

The historical and theological sources cited by the modern detractors of Reformation worship will be clearly evident once they get around to presenting their position. Will they be citing the Westminster Divines, the Reformation Dutch Synods, John Calvin, John Knox, Samuel Rutherford, George Gillespie, and John Owen in support of their views? We already know the answer to that question.

At that point there won’t be any doubt about who the real classical Protestants are and who are innovators in worship.

I also ask the reader to consider the following questions: Were the Calvinistic Reformers and their Confessions all wrong in their interpretation of Scripture concerning worship? Were the Lutherans, Prelates and Romanists right?

In providing the *specifics* of their position on worship will our modern reformers prove to the onlooking Christian community that they follow in the footsteps of the original Reformers? Or, will they show that they follow in the footsteps of those who opposed the Reformation? Will they adopt the classical Protestant position on worship or will they reject it — and be honest enough to say so publicly?

There are two sides to the coin of the regulative principle of worship. If you agree with it and apply it faithfully to every part of public worship, you are in agreement with the Westminster Assembly and the Covenanted Reformation. If you fundamentally disagree with it, then you have embraced the fundamental principles of Roman Catholic worship.

There is no neutrality; you either worship God according to His appointment, or you will find some human substitute. (This article has been adapted from “Saul in the Cave of Adullam by Reg Barrow.)

Why are Gibson guitars such a popular brand of guitars?

Posted by | Posted in Society | Posted on 26-12-2010

Some brands of guitar stick out in the minds of musicians of all types. For cars the list is Lamborghini, Porsche, and Ferrari. Amongst guitars, Gibson brings this kind of quality to mind. And you don’t need the most expensive guitar in the line to get the quality you’d expect from such a brand. This is true for a lot of reasons.

Gibson guitars have a classic look. An instrument needs to perform, and obviously a Gibson does, but for many people the look of a Gibson is alluring. The tunings pegs have a vintage style and shape, the colours (especially the different “bursts”) are simply stunning, and the company has produced so many quintessential guitars for various genres that the image of a Gibson has come to be one of the first images people summon in their imagination when they think of the company. This is true in acoustic playing with the J-45, it’s true of hard rock with the Gibson Les Paul’s, and the old ES series is the archetypical jazz archtop. Seeing the guitars of legends in your own hands is a good feeling!

But there’s a reason why knock off companies who produce guitars that look like the real thing don’t clean up. A guitar must perform. For performers, a crowd will be unforgiving if your guitar won’t keep tune, and nobody wants to tune it between songs. For beginners, it’s easy to believe you’re not playing well in the elementary stages if you hear cacophonous sounds coming from your strings, and this can be disheartening; even if you’re playing right, you don’t have the ear to determine that your guitar is out of tune and it’s not the fault of your inchoateness. Also, Gibson guitars are precisely crafted so the strings and the neck are perfectly parallel. This is of the utmost importance to a player as ideally the strings are of equal distance along the entire length of the neck. Guitar necks are given to warping, and in cheap instruments this can happen more than you’d like!

Finally, the reason why guitars are played in the first place: the sound. For this there is no substitute. To the untrained eye guitars might look the same, but hearing the two one after the other is no contest. Whether it’s their vintage acoustic guitars or their new digitally tuned guitars these guitars sound classic! They are known for their deep, well rounded tone. The arch-tops have a thick but warm, mellow sound that’s ideal for chording or soloing. The Les Pauls have a distinct crunch that other luthiers envy. The other reasons alone wouldn’t be sufficient cause to explain Gibson’s dominance in the field for so many decades.

The Gibson brand has become synonymous not just with the legends who play it, but with superiority in general. They have never cut corners to sacrifice the quality of their musical instruments. Their innovations over the years have been appreciated by pros and novice’s alike, and it’s no wonder that for so many years people have purchased their guitars.

Santiago de Cuba: a Cultural heritage

Posted by | Posted in Culture, Provinces and Locations, Santiago de Cuba | Posted on 26-08-2008

Within Cuba, Santiago has attained a culture very much of its own, a rich culture that accurately expresses the character of the territory, its mixture of races and traditions, more varied than in any other part of the island, a condition that has contributed through times to the emergence of prototypes of the national folklore, as all artistic manifestations are performed here.

Santiago de Cuba boasts classics like Esteban Salas, considered the Father of the Cuban Music, intellectual Pablo Laf argue, who was married to Carlos Marx’s daughter, and Pedro Santacilia, who was married to a closed relative of Mexican patriot Benito Juárez, poet lose Maria Heredia, the pioneer of Romanticism in the continent, Emilio Bacardi, Santiago de Cuba’s first mayor and the founder of the first museum-library in Cuba.

Santiago also became the home of important personalities that one way or another became attracted to the city, like the Henriquez family, from Santo Domingo, and French immigrants and their black slaves, who arrived here at the end of the 8 century. These are but a few of the many reasons why Santiago rightly deserves the name of Cultural Capital of the Caribbean.

The foundations for most of the cultural movements that later would become popular in the Caribbean can be traced to Santiago de Cuba, in areas like music, poetry, painting, sculpture and handicrafts.

The Contradanza was developed, and the Cuban son was born here, as was the bolero, the coral songs, and the so-called Santiago traditional Trova (song movement), which combines French violins, Afro-Caribbean traditions, and Cuban country music.

It has institutions devoted to consolidating cultural manifestations in a systematic way, like Casa del Caribe (Caribbean House), the African Cultural Center, the “Antonio Bravo Correoso” Cultural Athenaeum, the Antonio Maceo Research enter, and Casa de La Musica (House of Music).

Santiago is responsible for much of the country’s music development, as confirmed by many international arts festivals, like those of choir, Caribbean music, Terracotta (a visual arts expression) as well as the naive arts encounter at Mella municipality, the Matamoro Son Festival, and the national ‘Pepe Sanchez” Trova and Charanga (at Palma municipality) festivals.

Expressions of the cultural development at Cuba’s most Caribbean city are its fourteen museums, twenty-one archives, eight libraries, nine 6 mm and eighteen 35 mm cinema halls, in addition to the Orfeón Santiago, the Coro Madrigalista, the Ballet Company, and the Arts School. Other cultural institutions include two exhibition halls, an amphitheater, ten cultural houses, nine theater halls, two concert halls, several folkloric dance troops and cultural community associations, and the “Antonio Maceo” Revolution Square.
